Question about getting bumped

I regularly log in in the morning, then go get some coffee. Then I'll browse a few posts. Then I'll check to see if I've received my files from customers. Then I"ll browse a few posts and hit respond to respond to something that catches my interest.

And I always have to log back in at that point.

Is this normal for the boards? Or is it because I'm using Firefox on a Macintosh? Or because I'm a tool who is too lazy to go through my user profile and adjust settings?

Re: Question about getting bumped

Gah the title of this thread is deceptive! I thought it was about people or members being bumped off!

Anyway its because you only stay logged in for 15 minutes at a go without any activity, after that it logs you out automatically.

Ah Okay thanks. Kinda figured as much. It's not even an inconvenience, just wanted to make sure it wasn't because I was being stupid.

Re: Question about getting bumped

Nah its a gripe i've had when making long posts, have to type at speeds which mean common errors like typo's occur and leads to folks accussing you of being disabled or whatever, can get nasty.

I think the best advice i've heard is to use an auto log in if its not a public/shared machine you use.

I generally have this site open all the time and never have to log back on, even after shutting down the computer. I did select "remember me" and I'm also using Firefox so I'm not sure why you have the problem.

Re: Question about getting bumped

The problem I have is, when I click the button to go to the first new post, it takes me to the very first post in the thread...

Re: Question about getting bumped

You know when you use auto log in Mrs. M, do all the new posts go blank and as if nobody has posted since you last visited if you spend more than 15 minutes inactive? Is it like another log in by the system after every 15 minutes or just one continuous log in?

That's what mine does.

I'll stay logged in, but if I view my subscribed posts, it'll say "no new posts". Then when I click "view posts", I'll see that they've been updated quite recently.

Not a huge problem, but it is a minor bug.

When I'm inactive, no matter how long, I just go to "new posts" and it shows all the new ones since my last activity.

Re: Question about getting bumped

Damn! I always thought it would be as if you logged out and back in! I must have left various screens/windows/browsers open for days for no damn reason!

Re: Question about getting bumped

Like Mrs M, I also use Firefox and I remain logged in all the time, and never have the problem mentioned in the OP.

Re: Question about getting bumped

I use IE and I never have any of the problems mentioned. "new posts" always displays everything I haven't read and I never have to relog.

Re: Question about getting bumped

Perhaps it is some software your company is using.
There are some VPN (Virtual Private Network) client software I know of that does things like this.

I don't know what checking for files entails, but this might happen if you're doing something that clears your cookies. As you navigate around, this site looks at a session cookie in your cookies folder, and bases the HTTP transmissions on that. If suddenly this cookie were altered or gone, it would have the same effect as logging out.
