Friends?

I may be just completely out of the whole social networking paradigm, but I don't quite understand the purpose of the new "friends" feature. Is there any functional change in having another poster on my list of friends? The programmer in me wants to know what's at work here.

W.r.t. your first clause, I am, too. I asked the same question about thius feature in the "New Features" thread by Marc. It's supposed to be like MySpace of Facebook thingy. I'm not active in that, so for me, it's kinda a nice thing to ask or be asked, I guess.
