Thread combining.

Do you really thing that discussion of 4 candidates can be contained in 4 threads? Just let it be. Make a forum for each candidate if you like. A 1400 reply thread is not a good idea, nor is closing every thread thats similar.

Re: Thread combining.

Was there any good reason to combine the threads? If each candidate has 12, 50, 100 threads... so what?

Re: Thread combining.

This is a quick work in progress....the idea is we will make a forum for each candidates side...as in McCain Forum/ Obama Forum.
In this will be a general discussion thread, which should be where folks post comments that do not need a new thread..and then people could also make threads in these forums when there is something new that merits a new thread.

The problem has been (and numerous folks have complained) that the "candidate/elections" thread had several duplicates, 5000 threads about who farted yesterday etc. - that discussion on actual issues was becoming impossible.

It should be noted - this was done in the 2004 election - and was a successful move.

Re: Thread combining.

The move is a bit annoying because now it's even harder to keep track of the discussion you were trying to follow. The threads were different, but now since there is no clear topic it's difficult to discuss anything specific.

Did I say a bit annoying? I meant it's verrry annoying.

I second that motion. Each person of interest in this election has a multitude of discussion topics.

An alternative suggestion is: Create sub-forums within for each candidate.

That way, the integrity of the thread title and content will remain intact.

It is indeed.

Re: Thread combining.

The idea behind the thread combining was due to the enormous proliferation of new threads each day on similar topics. We're currently looking at various options to assist, but it would greatly help if members could contain their discussions to threads already in existence unless a new event takes place to necessitate a new thread.

Re: Thread combining.

Perhaps there should have been a solution first. Was anyone complaing about the many topics?

As I said above - yes they were.
There was discussion as to what to do awhile back when the forum was taken over by Obama threads - you guys should remember how many complaints there were about the "Obamabots" as many of you called them - it was way out of hand.
I don't remember what thread it was, or who it was - but someone claimed they counted all the new Obama threads made in one day - I think they said it was 27...most of which probably could have been in one thread.
Right now I would wager there were at minimum 50 Palin threads, many only different angles of the same subject.

Yes. Members felt like they were posting the same thing in different treads meaning there were on too many threads on the exact same topic. When we have multiple threads on the same topic then our general rule is to combine the threads. The other problem we had is that when you post in a threads it gets bumped up and members said that threads were getting lost. Once again merging threads was way to combat this until we had our permanent solution in place. Now we have our two new sub-forums up and hopefully all is well.

Again, we want to thank everyone for their patience as we worked to get the new forums set up.

Happy Posting
