Allan Bevington

Quote:
Beaver County Times -- BEAVER FALLS - Morado Dwellings residents knew something was wrong when they saw the two "uniforms" walking through their neighborhood, asking questions about the family of Allan Bevington.

"They look like the people who knock on people's doors and give them bad news," Ed Steiner remembered telling a friend.

Bevington's friends held their breath as they waited. Maybe he was only wounded, they prayed. The news was the worst kind.

Sgt. Allan R. Bevington, 22, was killed Thursday while serving with the U.S. Army in Ar Ramadi, Iraq. Bevington, a combat engineer, died when one of the dreaded Iraqi booby traps known as improvised explosive devices blew up, an Army official said. To date, 977 soldiers serving in Iraq have been killed by IEDs, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count Internet site, which tracks such statistics based on official military reports.

Bevington had been assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, of the 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany. He is the fifth Beaver County resident to die while serving in Iraq.

Details of his death were sketchy.

Maj. Nathan Banks, an Army spokesman, said Bevington had one of the most dangerous jobs in Iraq. His duties included seeking out and disarming IEDs. He was killed while cordoning off an area, Banks said. He could offer no further details.

However, military officials told Bevington's family that he was killed when a roadside bomb exploded as he was riding in a vehicle.
Rest in peace Allen.

Kim Wadim

Quote:
Body of Danish soldier killed in Iraq to be returned Friday COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - The body of a Danish soldier killed in Iraq last week will be returned to Denmark on Friday, the Air Force said. Lance Cpl. Kim Wadim was killed Sept. 23 when a roadside bomb detonated near a three-car motorcade carrying nine members of a Danish Air Force unit assigned to protect diplomats from Denmark in southern Iraq. Eight other soldiers were injured. No diplomats were traveling with the motorcade heading for the Danish Camp Dannevang, near the southern city of Basra. Wadim's body will be flown to the Karup air base, 265 kilometers (164 miles) northwest of Copenhagen, where a military memorial service will be held, the Air Force said Tuesday. Wadim, 36, was part of a 10-man team responsible for the security of Danish Foreign Ministry officials. The unit is not part of the 463-member Danish Army contingent based at Camp Dannevang. Wadim became the third Danish soldier killed by roadside bombs in Iraq. A fourth Dane was killed by friendly fire in 2003, and another was killed in a car accident in southern Iraq.
Rest in peace Kim.

Windell J. Simmons

Quote:
Lexington Herald-Leader -- HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. - Friends of an Army soldier from western Kentucky who was killed last week in Iraq remembered Windell J. Simmons as a leader and energetic friend.

Simmons, 20, known by his middle name, Jeryd, joined the Army after he graduated from Christian County High School in 2004. He died of injuries he suffered Saturday in Taji, Iraq, when a roadside bomb detonated near his vehicle during combat operations, the military said.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

One of his former high school teachers remembered Simmons on Wednesday as a serious student, who was quiet in class.

"I had Jeryd for two years in pre-calculus and (advanced placement) calculus," teacher April Harris told the Kentucky New Era of Hopkinsville. "He could have taken the easy route, but he wanted to prepare himself."

She said Simmons was more relaxed around his friends. She said she knew he had an interest in joining the military, and it broke her heart when she heard Simmons had been killed in combat.

One of his high school friends, Tad Abukuppeh, said Simmons enjoyed life and his friends.
Rest in peace Jeryd.

Velton Locklear III

Quote:
Seattle Times -- Two soldiers, including a 29-year-old who most recently lived in Lacey, Thurston County, died Saturday after an explosive detonated near their Humvee in Riyadh, Iraq.

Sgt. Velton Locklear III, 29, and Pfc. Kenneth E Kincaid IV, 25, of Lilburn, Ga., were in the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Locklear lived in Thurston County with his wife, Denise, and their two sons, before being shipped out this summer for his second tour in Iraq, said his sister-in-law Debbie Littlejohn.

Denise Locklear and sons Velton IV, 7, and Nathan, 5, moved to Honolulu this summer when Locklear was transferred from Fort Lewis, Littlejohn said.

"He was really nice, really compassionate. He had a great personality," Littlejohn said Tuesday in a phone interview from Honolulu. "You always felt comfortable around him."

Locklear, who originally was from Texas, joined the military, following in his father's footsteps.
Rest in peace Velton.

Kenneth E Kincaid IV

Quote:
Star Bulletin -- Three soldiers from the 3rd Brigade were killed in Iraq:

» Pfc. Jeremy R. Shank, 18, who was killed Sept. 6 while on patrol near Balad.

» Sgt. Velton Locklear III, 29, of Lacey, Wash.

» Pfc. Kenneth E Kincaid IV, 25, of Lilburn, Ga.

Locklear and Kincaid were killed Saturday when a homemade bomb exploded near their Humvee in Riyadh. Three others in the vehicle that Kincaid, 25, was driving survived the blast.

Locklear, Shank and Kincaid were members of the 3rd Brigade's 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry.

Kincaid enlisted in the Army in October 2005, Locklear in 2003. Both were assigned to Schofield Barracks in February.

Kincaid had enlisted last year because he wanted a better life for his two girls, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported. He and his wife, Rachel, have two daughters, Abi, 3; and Keni, 5.
Rest in peace Kenneth.

Carlos Dominguez

Quote:
Augusta Chronicle -- SAVANNAH, Ga. - A Beatles melody has been running through Lisa Dominguez's head ever since she learned her father was killed Saturday in Iraq.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is the title of the song Carlos Dominguez would sing to his little girl, now 28. But he would always substitute "Lucy" with her name, Lisa.

"He used to personalize that song for me," she said Tuesday. "He was a very loving man. When he gave, he gave with his whole heart."

Staff Sgt. Dominguez, 57, an Army reservist and 20-year Savannah resident who was called back to active duty, was killed Saturday when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Taji, Iraq, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.

Staff Sgt. Dominguez deployed to Iraq in April, and he kept in contact with his family through weekly e-mails and telephone calls, said his wife, Kim Dominguez.

As a civil affairs specialist, he was helping Iraqis rebuild their nation and was proud of his work, she said.

"He was helping the Iraqi people bring freedom and peace," Kim Dominguez said. "He said it was dangerous, but he was accomplishing his duty."

A native of Los Angeles, Staff Sgt. Dominguez and his family moved to Savannah nearly 20 years ago. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
Rest in peace Carlos.

Rene Martinez

Quote:
Miami Herald -- A decorated young Marine from Southwest Miami-Dade was killed in action Sunday in Iraq, the military announced Monday.

Lance Cpl. Rene Martinez, 20, died during a combat operation against enemy forces in Iraq's al Anbar province.

Martinez, a mortarman, joined the armed forces in July 2004 and was deployed to Iraq about three months ago.

His unit, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C., has spent its tour of duty training and working with Iraqi security forces, said 1st Lt. Barry Edwards, a 2nd Marine Division spokesman.

''In doing so, they were denying insurgent strongholds in and around several Iraqi cities,'' Edwards said.

Martinez, a graduate of Miami Sunset Senior High, wanted to be a Marine since he was a little boy, his sister Maria ''Gaby'' Martinez said.

Martinez, 19, last heard from her big brother on Sept. 13. He was a dedicated service member, but when Rene Martinez spoke with his family, he avoided talking about his experiences in Iraq, his sister said.

Instead, they talked about happier times and future plans. The siblings planned to move back to Miami around the same time, when Gaby Martinez graduates from college in Georgia and when her brother got out of the service.

''He was determined to finish his four years with a good record, then he wanted to come back home and study accounting,'' Gaby Martinez said. ``He had a good heart.''

Rene Martinez had been assigned to the 2nd Marine Division since January 2005. In that time, he earned medals for combat action, overseas deployment and global terrorism service.

''He was a fairly well decorated Marine for his age,'' Edwards said.

Funeral arrangements for Martinez are being planned. His unit will organized a memorial for him in Iraq, Edwards said.

Martinez was the second South Florida service member killed in Iraq this month. On Sept. 10, Army Spc. Alexander Jordan, 31, of Palmetto Bay, died after being attacked by enemy fire in Baghdad.

At least 119 service members from Florida have been killed since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
Rest in peace Rene.

Lisa Leeper said, "He was a very, very good boy, loving, protective, just a good boy."

Lisa Leeper of North Buffalo has lost her only son. Twenty year old Lance Corporal Howard March, Jr. was killed on Sunday while serving in the Anbar province of Iraq, where the second Battalion 8th Marine Regiment routinely did roadside vehicle inspections.

Leeper said, "He was a wonderful decisive young man who knew what he wanted to do with his life and he did it."

U.S. Marine Corps Gy. Sgt. Keith Shepherd said, "He was a motivated young man and he always came in here with a smile on his face. In fact, I remember it like he was sitting here."

He and his best friend joined the Marines right after they graduated from Hutch Tech two years ago.

Funeral plans have not been finalized.
