Usually I would agree that such invitations are fake, but the government of Afghanistan really invited USSR to protect the country against the TALIBAN which was strongly supported by USA (CIA operations led by Osama bin Laden). So the Americans helped to put Taliban to power - as they put Saddam and Musharraf. I guess that USSR did not have any political interest to Afghanistan, but they were afraid of muslim ideology spreading to Tajikistan etc. (which was later shown to be a big problem in Tajikistan where was a long war until 1998 or so).

USA has used these "invitations" and UN sanctions as excuses to rob natural resources of many countries. Usually USA organizes a false flag operation and then say that they are forced to destroy this and that country. Do you remember how the people of Iraq invited US Army and celebrated when they came - that was all a ridiculous piece of theatre.

Your oft-repeated, poorly-researched, false claim that Osama Bin Laden worked for the CIA has been completely debunked by a journalist that interviewed Bin Laden himself.

You didn't ask if Russia had military bases 'around the world', you asked if they had bases outside their borders. They do. There are active Russian military bases in most of the ex-Soviet states.

That I agree on. Strong standing army is a good thing, but I fear the old arms race might ignite once again over trivial matters.
