So it was a confident and contented Obama who faced reporters Tuesday in Jordan for his first news conference of the trip. He handled the expected question about his meeting with Gen. David Petraeus by saying he perfectly understood the U.S. commander's opposition to any timetable that would limit his options, but that as commander in chief, he, Obama, would weigh Iraq's needs against those in Afghanistan -- and also against the interests of the domestic economy.

It was a skillful answer, not rejecting Petraeus's views but asserting a president's own larger responsibility.

On the other hand, his saying that there was no way to know what would have happened in Iraq if the United States had followed his advice to start the withdrawal of troops two years ago rather than embarking on the "surge" seemed disingenuous. Obama still has trouble admitting when he is wrong.

And, however small this opening of relations with Iran is, it is a U-turn on a policy that so many have criticized this administration and this adminidstration alone for having, even though we have had no relations with Iran for 30 years.

This is a great step back in TWAT. I thought we would go after any terrorist, or any nation that supports the terrorist after 911. When the mushroom clouds are blooming over US cities, will Bush get the blame he would apparently deserve if we now change course on this policy?

No. Bush is doing the right thing, finally. He finally realizes that tough talk is just making things worse, and that aggressive diplomacy, even if there are rough patches, is better than doing nothing.

Look where tough talk brought us: a more prominent and dangerous Iran and North Korea on the world stage. Why? Because they're not as sophisticated as us, and when we talk tough, they get scared and reach for their nukes. Also, Ahmadinejad wants to get re-elected next year. He's running now on the same campaign that Bush ran on 4 years ago and it's going like this: "See! I kept you safe!". They only elected him out of fear, and now public opinion in Iran has changed and they want more moderate leadership.

Bush seems to have been reminded that he's got only a few more months in office, and that means it's legacy time.

That legacy could well be the toppling of the terrorist supporting regiem in Iran. Some sembalnce of negotiations are necessary for appearance's sake before shock and awe can commence. Eventually, as the appointed day draws nearer and the demands become more intolerable to the Iranian government, we can throw our hands up in the air and claim negotiations were tried and failed. An ultimatum of 48 hours can be given to Imanutjob, after which the fun can begin.

I agree with you. He is finally doing the right thing and at least talking with them. Some people seem to think that talking with them means agreeing with them or bowing to their wishes. It definitely does not mean that. Talking with them shows that we have some respect for them even if we don't agree with them. Nothing can be solved by us shutting up and not talking at all.

Now only if someone can get through to that paranoid schizophrenic, Hugo Chavez, and get him some medication

It's historically moronic! You can not negotiate with these people, diplomacy is nothing more than a delay tactic to them.

If we do not deal with Iran and stop them from developing nuclear weapons, I can assure you Israel will. What do you suppose the ramifications of that would be? Far worse than if the US handled the situation that much is for sure.

If, big if, Iran is interested in building nukes, why would that be?

Get a clue!

Iran's government is that of a religious theocracy, an extreme one at that.
With it's present leadership it's a forgone conclusion what they would do should they acquire a nuclear weapon. They would not hesitate to martyr the entire nation to achieve their goal of a middle east where there is no state of Israel. You have to remember martyrdom is the preferred way for a Muslim to die.

That's why martyrdom is the death cause number one for Muslims, right??

Amazing how you guys see some sort of change in a consistant policy. Bush has maintained that we will not talk to Iran until they get rid of their nuclear ambitions. We will not invade them, but we wont promise not to leave that option open. What has changed in 8 years? We sent someone to the latest meeting to LISTEN to Irans latest stalling. We did not negotiate. We did not talk to Iran. We have embraced sanctions, and let the other countries offer up incentives. I really dont see any change.

Re: Whitehouse U-turn on Iran?

Going to war with Iran worries me. We can't afford another war nor can we risk more of US service members lives. I really hope that they can negotiate and convince Iran to shut down there Nuclear weapons program. I heard that Israel is planning on dropping bombs by late august is that true?
