Why does Congress have to be privy to operations that prevent terrorist attacks?

Apparently someone leaked this foiled bomb plot to the media before congress was even told. And some congressmen, including democrats are not happy with the Executive branch. The CIAs already started a internal review.
Diane Feinstein: Leak in foiled underwear bomb plot ‘has to be prosecuted’ [VIDEO] | The Daily Caller
On this weekend’s “Fox News Sunday,” California Democratic Sen. Diane Feinstein, the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, spoke out about a story from the Associated Press that exposed a secret joint operation between the U.S. government and the Saudi government, which foiled an underwear bomb plot by al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.
According to the California Democrat, the leak is a serious one.
“A big one — this leak is serious,” she said. “This leak essentially — well, this operation — was closely held. It was CIA, FBI, Homeland Security and TSA. So, a limited number of people knew about it. General procedure would have the chairman and the vice chairman of each [of the] intelligence committees briefed during the attack, or prior to it. This was not the case, there was no briefing.”
Whoever leaked the information, she said, should be prosecuted, because the leak jeopardized the government’s ability to fight terrorism.
“Apparently, the leak came to an AP reporter,” she continued. “The government called, asked that the story be held, the story was held until Monday and then was released. What this does, it certainly jeopardizes the asset. It certainly jeopardizes our ability to relate to other countries, for other countries to help us, and it gives a tip off to AQAP [al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula] to be more careful about who they use as their couriers, as their bombers. So, the leak really did endanger sources and methods, and the leak, I think, has to be prosecuted. So, the investigation is being done, [and] hopefully can be concluded, and criminal charges will go to the Department of Justice.”

Moderates are not republicans

Yeah, oversight is essential, yet you can bet your ass that there are more intel operations that are never communicated to the oversight committees. I would bet there is alot of intel that is told only on a need to know basis.
I don't see how this compromises anything in the intel biz. AQ surely is smart enough to know who their enemies are. And how were we gonna keep this attempt a secret from AQ? You think they would have trusted the double agent when he did not blow up the plane? It's not like he would have been allowed to return to them, but arrested and interrogated.
To think that AQ did not already know the saudis were helping the US is ludicrous.
It is seldom that a double agent has a long service life, when given duties as this guy was given. He wasn't just passing on info, he was carrying the bomb for gods sake. His life as a double was over as soon as he was picked to die for Islam.

What Ms. Feinstein is really upset about here is that the leak compromised her ability to get some TV time out of the operation....

I'm kind of busy today, so if you could go ahead and offend yourself on my behalf, that would be great....
What Senator Feinstein is upset about is the details of an intelligence operation being leaked to the press. I think you are reading too much politics into this.
AQ would know that the bomber was in custody, they would have no idea how that was done, OTOH, the leak may be disinformation, a false story to throw people off the real source.
We'll have to wait a long time to get the real story.
If a man were behind four months on his mortgage and was talking to you about his plans to build an addition on his home you would think him daft and delusional. But in Washington, ignoring a current crisis to discuss grand dreams is called “boldness” and “vision.”
So far it appears to be a bipartisan criticism. The intel community is upset, and congress is upset.
