Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

I new to this site, but an addict already (though I may drop off for bit here and there as I travel fairly frequently).

My name is Ryan I'm going on 26 and am a 4th year PhD student in Organic Chemistry (my thesis is on the design, synthesis, and characterization of conducting polymers if anyone cares) at UCLA, but I grew up in Oregon and the SF Bay Area. I call school work because at this point I don't take classes, just log hours and fart around on the internet while my reactions are stirring My girlfiend (whom I hope will be my wife some day) recently left LA for Grafton MA where she is attending vet school. I hope to land a post-doc position at Harvard and rejoin her next year, but in the mean time I kill time writing long posts about myself on political forums...

I'm a registered Green (as if you couldn't tell from my Avatar), but I'll vote democrat when the race is close. I value the environment as the number one long-term priority of the entire planet and believe government to be the only institution capable of managing our natural resources responsibly (though we aren't currently!).

I'm an hard-core atheist since birth, but I respect people's beliefs. I'm about as far left as you can go, but seem to agree with liberatarians more than my fellow hippie-greens. As a chemist and a pothead I KNOW this shit ain't that bad for you and think it's a shame that 60% of our prison population is there on drug charges and even worse that most are black. I want racial harmony but believe that everyone needs to work at it, not just white people. I want a third party in the US and instant-runoff elections in races where 3 or 4 serious candidates can compete instead of being locked out by the big two.

On the other hand my views can be radical, for example I don't disagree with the idea of taxing the crap out of people for having too many children. I'm also the only granola-hippie-longhair (actually I shave my head) I know that thinks everyone should fire a gun at some point and I'm a lifetime member of the NRA... Not because I agree with their uber-right wing 2nd amendment propaganda, but because my grandpa gave me my membership for my birthday Seriously though I own several guns, drive a bick red-neck pickup ('95 Chevy 2500 V8 4x4; my high school dream car), and love target shooting, though I don't shoot animals unless I intend to eat them... I'm also a vegetarian, go figure?

Since I've been in school for 20 years straight (the last 8 have been 365 days a year too) education is a high priority for me and I think the US is doing a horrible, horrible job educating us and has been for years. The quality of undergraduates has been on a steady decline for decades, from what I've gleaned from older profs and my own experiences. The current White House wants to go back to burning witches at the stake and teaching creationism which isn't helping!

I like this site because it tears me away from my liberal pat-me-on-the-back propaganda sites where everyone agrees with each other. I really enjoy intelligent debate with people who see things differently. I'm very open minded and, if given a rational enough arugment, will change my view on matters. I can only ask the same of others

I'm very impressed at the backgrounds of people here. Lot's of military service (thank you BTW for doing that so that I don't have to), lot's of internationalism (is that a word?), lot's of smart folk. I'm a science nerd, so I can fact check science issues pertty dern well, but I'm basically retarded in areas of history, literature, math, spelling, government... Basically all the things that would make one a good political debater. I'm also a jazz musician (though I have little time to play anymore ) and a computer nerd but that's neither here nor there.

Currently all my pet issues have taken a back seat to fighting the conservative take-over of my country which I love very much though I've been quoted as saying I will move to Canada if Bush wins in November and I'm not entirely sure I'm kidding anymore...

Good to have you here fearofcarpet. Although I am very busy at this moment and plan on quitting for a short while, I hope we have some interesting exchanges in the future as I return. I don't think you and I will have that much to be debating about though.

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Greetings, all. I thought I'd take the time to introduce myself before getting flayed in the actual discussions.

My name's Jeff and I hail from MA, though currently living in RI. I received a public education in Massachusetts and comples a BA in English in Rhode Island. Since finishing my first Bachelor's degree, I have returned to business school to finish my BS in accounting. Being a social liberal and a fiscal conservative, I guess you could best define me as a Libertarian.

I'm a geek in pretty much every sense of the word. I'm an avid gamer (video games, PnP, and currently addicted to CoH), honestly love my current major (I'm told it takes a very "special" breed to love Accounting), watch Food Network and The Discovery channel more than pretty much anything else, though I am admittedly a CSI/Law and Order junkie, and, of course, am becoming more and more of a civics geek. I guess, in the end, I try to learn a little bit of everything so I easily understand an expert talk about his/her field of expertise, as well to trick people into believing that I'm much smarter than I truly am. Finally, I absolutely love good quotes and can misquote scores of great lines.

Well, that's pretty much me in a nutshell. Closing words, given recent events, I'm beginning to wonder if the GOP is funding Kerry's campaign since, if he were to run unopposed, I'm certain Bush would lose.

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Greetings

I have never introduced myself on a forum before because I was always too paranoid about the lunatic fringe element, but now I can see it might be a good idea to tell a little about myself so people won't assume things incorrectly about me and seek me out anyway.

I am from the Viet Nam generation and my very first vote in a presidential election was for Nixon because he promised to end the Viet Nam War and I hated buracracy. I originally hail from Utah and love Moab. No I am not a Mormon but I have plenty of family members who are and I know some polygymists. I went to high school with Karl Rove if that is important to anyone. I am female, happily married to an electrical engineer and wish I didn't have so many pets. I am an artist by trade and I have worked in animation for over 20 years and now I am fed up with it. The animation industry is changing with globalization like everything else and I would like to do other kinds of art anyway. I am thinking to do political cartooning and hope to test my political satire out on you guys. Heh,heh, heh. I love both Republican and Democrat humor no matter how much it hurts but I confess I am getting fedup with rhetorical arguements on most forums. I am a registered Independent with social democrat and fiscal conservative leanings. I don't consider myself a liberal but I have no problem defending them in their absence. (hence the confusion for conservatives)

I have been to France, England, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. I speak pidgeon english very well in my travels and because of that my normal english is sometimes not so good and also because my fake accents are so bad. Basically, I'm a verbal hodgepodge.

Well enough about me, I look forward to bantering about with you all.

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Hi! I'm new: just started to post a few days ago. I'm from NY (as you can tell by the name) - I work in midtown in finance, although we live in the suburbs. I was also born and grew up in the NYC area. I lived in Massachusetts for several years as well - so I am a true northeasterner. I am 30, married with two sons.

This looks like an interesting forum - a variety of opinion, and quite a large representation of countries for a U.S. political forum, so I am looking forward to participating.

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Hi all - new here, just joined. I've been looking for a good forum, with views from both sides, and this seems to be it.

Looks like some very good discussions here.

I need help (in more ways than one ) - I still can't decide who to vote for.
