Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

hello, I finally come to introduce me - I already said a lot of things ^^

I am 19, living in Paris. I'm a student in an engineer school (still 3 years of work and I'll be a programmer).
Since I'm 15, I follow actuality, and I'm getting more and more interested about the world around me; I am thinking of getting an economy diploma in addition of my engineer one.

Culturally, I mostly read comics (mangas) and watch films; from the USA, Europe or Asia. Very different ways to see the same medias
I also love rock music, from scandinavian black metal to english pop, or American classic rock.

I've been twice in the USA: the first time, I spent 3 weeks in an american family near boston; the second time I spent 1 week in New York. I've also been in Canada for 3 weeks. I like to discuss politics here because of the actuality - the elections of the new president - and the consequencies of american politics for the world.
Discussing french politics is a lot more annoying ^^, I hope soon Europe will become a real state, and the existing nations, only regions; it would bring a new balance to the world; I hope the USA and europe will stay allied.

For this reason and others, I hope Bush will lose the presidentials!

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

hm many differents things ^^
People were most of the nice and friendly, except a stupid old guy saying ' damn french they hate us dumb frogs' (I had still said nothing...).
The medias are a lot different compared to french media; the main difference is that they are very nationalists, some more than anothers. People in the USA often dont care about politics, but that is common in a lot of countries, and those on this forums aren't of this kind of course ^^.
I've been impressed by the cult of strenght and a nationalism (cars, flags, eagles, and a good exemple is the entry of the empire state building) in Boston and even more in New York, wich made me think immediately about fascism. But I also remember a guy in a shop selling rock clothes, in NY, saying 'hey, we don't all hate french people! Bush isn't MY president!' ^^

The violence was impressing, too. With the family, I spent 1 night in Syracuse. We heard gun shots... Followed by police or first aid vehicle sounds...We dont have this in France, and imo that's not coming from we have different people, but for we don't let every single sicko get a gun.

Finally, the presence of religion is incredible. Everywhere, there are so many "jesus loves you" "I believe in Jesus" "Join Jesus"... First, this cult around Jesus more than around God is strange, and makes me think of an idole. Second, since the french revolution, wich was as much against clerics than against the king [clericals and nobles were the 2 sides of a same medal: the lazy dominating class, living on the people's money], religion is kept in a very private role in France. People don't put stickies on their cars saying 'I believe in this or that', that would be seen as a 'I found the right way, you are in error' .

So the USA have a very different culture than Europe (Canada is more European than American imo), but still very similar compared to the rest of the world (I also went to turkey, marrocco, egypt, and I have known people from Russia and japan).

edit: favourite music bands are rammstein, dimmu borgir, children of bodom, supergrass, pixies, nirvana, joy division, sepultura, noir desir, planet smashers, motorhead, clash, hives,AC/DC, church, blur, etc...
favourite mangas / comics are sin city, hellboy, tank girl, bilal, franquin ,gotlib, parasite, blade of the immortal, clamp, akira, lanfeust, melody bondage etc...

Sounds like you saw new york, but not America! I saw Marsellies first, went to Castellet, Bandol, etc. and had a great time, before we left we went to Paris and it was one big rat race city like anywhere. Two cabbies nearly went to fistfighting over who would drive our group to the Eifel Tower. America os a place that you cannot describe and have the description hold true to all 50 states. You can't compare Ney York City to Bend Oregon....... visit again when you can !

Hmmm how about the re-introduce myself thread

This is actually more along the lines of a reintroduction than an introduction. (my original introduction is here) I was on here back in february or so but then got too busy (as a bit of friendly advice never take Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics II and Genetics all in the same semester). Not as busy now and having time to be bored as well. So I'm back. Hopefully for more than 3 posts this time. Plus I'm taking a political philosophy class this semester so maybe I can fool myself into thinking of this as homework. .....or not

Re: Hmmm how about the re-introduce myself thread

Shit I thought I edited the post above!
wanted to tell chassisman that I still don't know France very well, so I dont pretend to ever know the USA ^^
I hope that what I saw on the east coast is a not too bad overall idea - I heard that people in those regions are more european like, so it's probably a better (cooler) way for me to accept the american culture

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Hi From Idaho, Folks,

I'm what Garrison Kellor calls a "back issue" - 61 years old.

Philosopically, I'm an objectivist (small *0* - not a Randian).
Epistomology: Reason, no faith. I was raised a Mormon. That convinced me
to become an atheist.
Economics: A 'radical' defender of the free-market, despiseing corporate-state
'capitalism'.
Politics: Libertarian, small l and big L. I founded the Idaho Libertarian Party in
1976 and I have been an activist ever since, running for office many
times, including for the U.S. Senate.
War: 'Radically' anti-war ever since Vietnam, and including the war for empire
in Iraq.
News source: My favorite is the "Daily show" on the Comedy Channel.

This is my 3rd day here. My first posts have been under "U.S.Politics" with the thread being "Why shouldn't gays marry?". Until after the election I'm going to be really busy campaining for LP Presidential candidate, Michael Badnarik, so I might stick with that thread only 'till after the election.

This is a good part of my life at the moment, so here's a link:
www.Badnarik.org

I hope to meet many of you for friendly discussion in a month or so.
