Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!
Matt, before this conversation moves on I would like to make one thing clear. I do not regard any politician with awe or respect in any country on this earth of ours. I'm always amazed at the symbolism and mysticism which has surrounded the office of the President of the United States but I respect the fact that the people of the US seem to need this. On the other hand Bush is just like our Prime Minister - he's a politician chosen by his political party, quite often the one makes the best deal, and he only remains the leader whilst he has the support of that party.
Also I do not view George Bush as a metaphor for the United States. When I criticise George Bush I am not criticising the United States. I would be horrified if anyone viewed Little Johnny Howard as a metaphor for Australia.
Looking at the 'welcome' afforded Zeus there are people here so innured is the 'office' of President that they do view Bush as a metaphor for their country and are determined to twist the words of others to suit this perception. Now one expects this in debate, not in a thread which is supposed to welcome new members. Zeus can speak for himself in regard to this, and has done so, but I find it offensive. Particularly, as I have great affection for the 'people' of the United States.
