Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Sorry - I've been on holiday for a week in Dunkeld, Perthshire (also in Scotland!) where the Missus and I go every year for some peace and quiet, again, beautiful part of the world, so hence delayed replies!

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Hi. I'm Tanya, a 36 year old person lady type of human. I have two kids, one 13, one 7. Also a husband, who is becoming old and cantankerous, which makes me love him more. He goes out and designs implements of torture while I look after the kids and write very badly. In our off-time, we kill various pixelated entities together, which is great fun.

In a previous life when I was young and active and stuff, I worked on some campaigns, usually for Republican candidates. I also moderated Undernet #politics under both Thrall and uzi as tresboo (if anyone here knows what I'm talking about) and was an inhabitant of the AOL Newsroom back in the early days of online chat in ~1991 - hoping maybe an old vet of those places might be lurking around here somewhere maybe.

As I've become older, I've leaned heavily libertarian and indeed am very socially liberal - could be because of where I am and was brought up (SF Bay Area), so I see a lot of concrete evidence of relaxed social policies - very "live and let live" here and I like it very much - no riots here!

I'll likely do a lot of reading for a lot of days before I say anything worthwhile, but thought I'd say hello. Samantha is a good acquaintance of mine, she's wonderful, and she let me know about this place, so.. thank you Sam!

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Hello all - I'm a grandmother, author, and montessori teacher - socially liberal, fiscally conservative. I think both parties are two branchesof the same machine and we the people need to stop falling for the idea of politics as a partisan sport. We do better if we mix govt so that it shivers and whines on the razor's edge - politicians need to believe in consequences. I once liked McCain, back when he really was a maverick - now I can't say i like anyone (though Joe Biden has the highest entertainment value!)

I too was a lurker of the AOL Newsroom back around 1991. Hmm, wonder if our paths crossed back then.

Any friend of Sam's can't be all bad!

Welcome!

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Greetings to one and all! I found this forum by a most happy accident--serendipity, I believe they call it--when I was searching for the text of a speech given by the esteemed Prof. Noam at Illinois State University in 2003. I located a partial transcript grom a Google link in HERE...and then I looked around and it seemed to be a most agreeable place.

I write. I'd posted about 20 diaries at Daily Kos until the place exploded into an unmanageable monstrosity. (Oh, Markos himself is a fine fellow, but getting almost a million hits a day does not allow for the kind of hands-on management and care that made his site so nifty to begin with. I do still check out the front page there on a near-daily basis.) For about a year, I was the top contributor at Conceptual Guerilla's Strategy & Tactics...which came to a screeching halt earlier this month when grave internal conflict reared its head. I cross-posted some of those essays at Smirking Chimp, also. Right now, I'm working on a strictly non-political book about rock & roll (I was at Woodstock...) and likely won't be blogging until I get a good handle on that project.

So hanging out here looks like a viable option in the interim...

Let's not beat about the bush: The tireless efforts of the formidable Prof. Chomsky might just save the world. If enough people listen, if enough people believe, if enough people take action, if, if, if. We're at a cusp of history here, ladies and gentlemen, I might even say at a precipice. Global Warming and nuclear proliferation, as Noam himself gravely notes, are being publicly denied and privately encouraged by a criminal regime which has seized control of this country. I, myself, would add Peak Oil to that list. How's that ancient Chinese curse go? "May you live in interesting times..."

I'm delighted to be here; at this point, I'm delighted to be just about ANYWHERE. I look forward to getting to know you all.

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Mark Twain: Thank you very, very much. I have confidence as well that it'll be a blast. Let us, as Captain Jean-Luc Picard was wont to say, "make it so." I must tell you up front that your screen name utterly floors me; Mr. Clemens was probably the greatest American writer of them all and his work has been a lengthy and surpassing joy to me for most of my life. I would not DARE to have taken it for my own, even had it been available. Wear it with enormous pride and bring it honor. (And your sig photo of Johnny Depp as a more contemporary inspiration of mine is dead on target as well. That Doctor could ROCK.)

Otter: Thank you as well. (Hope you find the salmon.)

Re: The Introduce Yourself thread!

Thanks, Hank - the site looks fantastic! Army isn't deployed now - he's on base in training. Gonna be a daddy for the 2nd time too! I think he gets deployed in a few months.
