yep... it's true... I like it... the righties here are tame compared to where we've been recently... and you can actually discuss things without wanting to reach into the screen to throttle them... I like that too...

I'm quickly giving politics more attention in my life - perhaps that comes from living in our nation's capital now or maybe because of the developing intolerance I now observe between the two parties.

I no longer discuss politics freely because of this intolerance. I've experienced personal insults and attacks at social gatherings. So, with my new job and location, I avoid political discussions altogether.

I'm thrilled to have an outlet for my opinions. I love to hear intelligent and logical counterpoints to my views so that I may alter my opinion. I welcome those kinds of counterpoints but give no credibility to those who generalize, pigeon-hole, attack, name-call, etc. when my or anyone's view is presented.

I love dogs, sailing, Big 10 football, beer, hanging out with friends, and a good thunderstorm (miss those Midwest boomers!).
G'day Si modo, I've come across you in the threads but good to get a little background on you here.

As English is my only language (shame on me) would you mind telling me what your name means?

I have two beautiful greyhounds called Ben and Smudge who are a huge part of my life. They are ex-racers. Years ago these beautiful dogs would have been put down in several barbaric ways once they stopped earning an income for their owners plus trainers. I call this 'pure capitalism'! Nowadays they are 'adopted' out into homes as pets. Which is a wonderful scheme as they have been 'companion' dogs for millenia. Racing for gambling purposes and gain has only been going for about 80 years.

This programme of adoption was started in the US and is one of the reasons I honour that country! Of course, this doesn't blind me to the mistakes the US makes. However, on the whole I think they are a worthy people who have long been confused and lied to by their leaders.

I adore thunderstorms!!! We get them in summer in Oz. This summer has been very tame as we are going through the 12th year of a very nasty drought in southern Oz. Global warming.

I found this forum by a most happy accident--serendipity, I believe they call it--when I was searching for the text of a speech given by the esteemed Prof. Noam at Illinois State University in 2003. I located a partial transcript grom a Google link in HERE...and then I looked around and it seemed to be a most agreeable place.

I write. I'd posted about 20 diaries at Daily Kos until the place exploded into an unmanageable monstrosity. (Oh, Markos himself is a fine fellow, but getting almost a million hits a day does not allow for the kind of hands-on management and care that made his site so nifty to begin with. I do still check out the front page there on a near-daily basis.) For about a year, I was the top contributor at Conceptual Guerilla's Strategy & Tactics...which came to a screeching halt earlier this month when grave internal conflict reared its head. I cross-posted some of those essays at Smirking Chimp, also. Right now, I'm working on a strictly non-political book about rock & roll (I was at Woodstock...) and likely won't be blogging until I get a good handle on that project.

So hanging out here looks like a viable option in the interim...

Let's not beat about the bush: The tireless efforts of the formidable Prof. Chomsky might just save the world. If enough people listen, if enough people believe, if enough people take action, if, if, if. We're at a cusp of history here, ladies and gentlemen, I might even say at a precipice. Global Warming and nuclear proliferation, as Noam himself gravely notes, are being publicly denied and privately encouraged by a criminal regime which has seized control of this country. I, myself, would add Peak Oil to that list. How's that ancient Chinese curse go? "May you live in interesting times..."

I'm delighted to be here; at this point, I'm delighted to be just about ANYWHERE. I look forward to getting to know you all.
Angel, I very much look forward to reading your posts.

All the rest of my many talents and faults will - I hope - become clear in the future.
I am looking forward to spirited debate.

I haven't been here much longer than yourself, but already I realise what we need is more quirkiness!!!

By gee, Birdzeye you are a bit of a contradiction, but my mother always said to me that it is a woman's prerogative to change her mind. I do try to live up to this maxim as much as I can but throughout my life I have remained staunchly leftist.

On the other hand, as I get older I am starting to thoroughly dislike change. None of it seems to be for the better as far as I'm concerned.

Does this make me a conservative?

I adjusted your account and inserted the poker playing tiger. I'm thinking you may have been having avatar troubles because your account is new and marked as "registered". I changed it to "registered +" which gives you the ability to start threads and I think allows for an avatar or larger avatar.

No devil smilie. When I come across smilies I like I save them to my photobucket account so that all my favorite smilies are in one place.

Also, I want to take the time to WELCOME all the new folks to the site. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. You may have noticed the inability to start threads - if you would like to request this be changed then you will need to PM me because I have to manually adjust the accounts.
