Pelosi for President?

According to an article by Nation writer John Nichols, San Francisco is about to launch a formal request of their Congressional Representative, Nancy Pelosi, to initiate an investigation into "High Crimes and Misdemeanors committed by President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney", which could then, if proven viable, be grounds for Impeachment.

Nancy Pelosi and Impeachment

This puts Pelosi in an unenviable position. She has already stated that she is committed to bipartisanship in Congress, and promised that the question of Impeachment is "off the table for now". Further, she has already lost ground as the unofficial Speaker of the House when her choice for House majority leader was voted down.

Any direct move she makes towards impeachment will seem politically motivated, because if Impeachment were to be successful, the next person in line to succeed the President and Vice President is - Speaker of the House.

So? Comments and rhetoric? Let the sh-t hit the fan, so to speak...

The whole impeachment thing is a farce. There is not going to be an impeachment. To impeach the president there must be a crime committed first. You can't just impeach simply because you don't like him.

The dems were just spouting off about impeachment to get their ignorant base riled up enough to vote.

The election is over, so the whole matter will fall to the wayside.

Well, I think in many people's mind, there have been a number of crimes committed, among them, tampering with the Constitutional Rights of American Citizens. But that is the whole purpose of an inquiry, to investigate whether these allegations have any basis.

And I think that there are still enough people riled up that the issue might be pushed, because they don't want Congress to sit on it's arse for another two years while Bush and Company fiddle around with the Rumsfeld options for dealing with Iraq.

Bush violated FISA, that's a slam dunk right there. Violating article 3, is a violation of international law, part of a treaty that the United States is a signatory. Treaties are binding, you violate a treaty, you violate the law.

These alone are enough to have impeachment hearings, and are far more serious issues to impeach a President for than the sham Clinton was put through.

Talk about double standards, you still support a party that is moving to burn our constitution, suspend free speech, rule with fear, and perpetuate a war on an abstract.

I think it's time to report for mandatory mental evaluations, we have one seriously sick puppy on our hands ...

Pelosi would be better in her current role as SofH because in that role, she'll be forever accountable to one of the most knowledgeable electorates in the country--the SF district.

If she were Pres, OTOH, I could see her compromising some basic liberal principles (freedom of speech, non-interventionism, etc.) for the sake of appeasing the dumbed-down national electorate. Pelosi is, after all, a political pragmatist. . .

. . .and there's nothing we want more than a political pragmatist perpetually accountable to freedom-loving idealists

Re: Pelosi for President?

Can any of the folks calling for impeachment show me where in the Constitution the Congress is authorized to hold concurrent trials for multiple officials?

You can impeach one at a time, but the replacement can (and would) be named before the next impeachment could begin.

So this fantasy of both Bush and Cheney being impeached at the same time and Pelosi leaping into the White House is just silly.
