Right. I don't know how old you are, but I recall actually hearing people in the late 50's and 60's say things like, "He must be smarter/better. He IS the president, after all."

In the case of heckling Bush, they see him as BOTH, and to the country in general. Not all, of course, as many Vietnam protesters were scared they'd be drafted while today's protesters are not in danger of that at this time. But I'd say the vast majority act, in their minds, for the good of the nation.

They want to change the positions of a LIVING person who DOES have the power to alter his course, and that of the country. Not that he will, but that doesn't matter here. There is no real comparison here, between political protest and what Phelps' merry band of dipshits practice.
So the distinction here is that the Phelps protesters have no reasonable expectation of their protesting furthering their goal, whereas the protesters of Bush at a ceremony have a reasonable expectation that Bush will see the light because of their shouting? I wouldn't think that the degrees of separation would matter, if results are the prime consideration (i.e. the fact that the particular soldier might not have been gay is irrelevant, since all soldiers are complicit in allowing homosexuals in the military by not, say, beating them to death, when they suspect a homosexual in the midst - perhaps they would protest the live soldiers if they weren't afraid those soldiers would simply knock their teeth out).

It appears to me that you're dressing up your visceral disgust at one group and not the other as a rational distinction. Make no mistake, I view Phelps as a sick person whereas I'd view the anti-Bush protesters as merely selfish, but I don't see shades of kookery. Both groups are claiming to be doing some sort of "moral duty" without regard for who it might be upsetting, and both groups should have no reasonable expectation of their actions creating the outcome they claim to want.

Not old enough to have heard that ( ), but old enough to have read takes on the POTUS from those days.

Why is it selfish to protest a needless war or constitutional violations or the fact that Bush might try to start another war with Iran?

Since when is patriotism selfish?

She's right. In fact, *I* give inspirational speeches all the time.
The problem is my Wife is sick of them and the cats just look bored.

So what Mrs. M. is saying is that people should protest "nicely" in places where they won't attract any attention.

(kinda defeats the whole rationale for protesting, but hey, at least it spares the corrupt pols any more embarassment )

I believe what most of us mean about the protests being worse in recent years is where the protest take place. Growing up, I didn't hear about assholes interrupting funerals, graduations, citizenship ceremonies, etc. in order to make a political statement. Decent folks consider it rude to do such things but there's no shortages of jerks in society. I know you think it's your "patriotic duty" to protest the President wherever he happens to be but if you did so, you'd be no better than the assholes I'm talking about.

If I were anywhere Bush was in earshot, I'd yell impeach, or end the war, or something to that effect.

It's my patriotic duty.

You're so obviously mistaken or misled about the point of the RIP thread, you have no idea what the point is, or you wouldn't ask such a strange and insulting question. Why such hostility?

If Obama as president lies to the American people, starts wars for no good reason, violates the constitution, you can bet your ass it will be patriotic to heckle and protest against him.

What on earth would make you think we'd accept it from him if we don't accept it from Bush?

If you're so partisan as to put your party before your country, don't assume others are the same way.
I didnt say the military heckled sam i said he was heckled . but nice duck

no hostility sam i just dont trust your true motives on that thread and i dont think you would be so easily moved by deaths in a war YOUR party would support

YOu once again didnt answer my question, if a person heckeld obama for what they feel he is incompetent on or that they felt like you do for bush that he is unfit would you allow that??

And since we have been down this road so many times i know you wont answer any question straight up so i dont expect real answers to the above . but i must point out; you know i am not a republican and i dont claim either party , we also know your are a active democrat , so your holier than thou ending there just shows why i ask you questions in regards to these issue............

No, cupcake, use that silly little head of yours for a moment. I'm saying that people shouldn't protest events such as citizenship ceremonies, funerals, graduations, etc. because they're doing so at the expense of the attendants AND they aren't effective. In fact, only a stupid dick would do something like that.

Most people were relaxing in the longest stretch of peace and prosperity in our history during the 90s. I don't remember any dissent. Except of course on the part of those Republican busy body hypocrites like Newt Gingrich who were investigating his private life, after Newt cheated on his own wife.

want to back up this statement

Not true. This partcular protest was a hole-in-one--they got GWB to say, w/his own flapper, that "we believe in freedom of speech" all the while he had the ones speaking their mind hauled away by security--instantaneous hypocrisy, right smack in front of the new citizens to be,

talk about a real world education

They can't. Those !@#$s keep getting arrested in Minneapolis airport bathrooms and similar places. Only then do they protest. . .

Quote:
"What do you think of that?"
This is what Sen. Larry Craig said to the policeman who'd just busted him for lewd conduct in a men's room. I can only imagine what went through the cop's mind at that moment. "Man, I got a big fish this time," or "who the heck is this a@@hole that he thinks that'll get him off?" Maybe he wondered what a United States Senator was doing cruising for sex in an airport bathroom?

The Pennsylvania Progressive: "What do you think of that?"
