Eric Holder for Attorney General?

Eric Holder for AG?

First a bio-

Eric Himpton Holder, Jr. (born January 21, 1951), is a former Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, United States Attorney and Deputy Attorney General of the United States. He is currently a senior legal advisor to President-elect Barack Obama, a position he also held in President-elect Obama's campaign. He was one of three members of President-elect Obama's vice-presidential selection committee.[1]
In mid-November 2008, Obama reportedly asked Holder to serve as the United States Attorney General in the incoming Obama Administration.[2] If nominated and approved, he would be the first African-American Attorney General of the United States.

Biography
Eric H. Holder, Jr. was born on January 21, 1951 in the The Bronx borough of New York City,[3] to parents with roots in Barbados;[4] Holder's father, Eric Himpton Holder, Sr. (1905 - 1970)[5] was born in Saint Joseph, arrived in the United States at the age of eleven aboard the S.S. Stephen on February 24, 1916, and eventually served[6] in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.[7] His mother, Miriam, was born in New Jersey while his maternal grandparents were immigrants from Saint Philip, Barbados.[7]

Holder grew up in Queens and attended public school until the age of 10. When entering the 4th grade he was selected to participate in a program for intellectually-gifted students.[8]

He went on to attend Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan[9] and attended Columbia University, where he played freshman basketball and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in American history in 1973. After conferral of Holder's undergraduate degree, Holder was admitted to and attended Columbia Law School, graduating in 1976. He worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund during his first summer and the United States Attorney during his second summer.[8]

Holder is married to Sharon Malone, an obstetrician; the couple have three children.[10] Malone's sister was Vivian Malone Jones, famous for her part in integrating the University of Alabama.[11]

Certainly impressive and an American success story, son of an immigrant father, gifted, accomplished, well done.

His career is outlined here.

so it appears Obama has floated his name as Attorney General.

There are a few points where in his conformation may become contentious I think. Namely the Rich pardon and the FALN terrorist release. Both issues in which he played a large part. I am curious if Obama has others on his list, and who they are exactly.

I personally am uncomfortable with the part he played in both of those issues.

Re: Eric Holder for Attorney General?

I'm ambivalent about him. He argued against aspects of the imperial presidency and the inevitable abuses that were implicit in the patriot act. On the other hand he has favored the idiotic war on drugs. And his involvement with the rich pardon is bad. As a matter of theory he has said the attorney general serves the people first and the president second which seems to indicate no more using DOJ as the slimiest sort of partisan political tool. But what is that kind of statement worth in light of the rich pardon? By some accounts he participated in getting the pardon aproved - by other accounts he merely failed to stop it. It definitely leaves his character and his willingness to stand up for his "prinicples" in question.
