I needed a money order for $1175 a couple years ago. They were required (due to the Patriot Act) to take all of my information, what the money order was for, who is was going to and report it to the gov. since it was over $1000. I just got a $500 MO there then went to another place and got one for $675. It's none of their business what I need a $1175 money order for or who I am giving it too.
The Patriot Act is more than just listening in on terrorists phone calls.

Well, no, because the bank I used in TN also has branches here. As to money orders I get them from the post office all the time no questions asked.
As to what banks do, I learned that lesson WAY before the Patriot Act when I tried to deposit one of the checks from my late husband's insurance. It seems that they 'investigate' every deposit over 5K. I had opened an account so that when our joint account was frozen after his death, I would have money to live on. They slapped a freeze on that account the minute I deposited the check. I just deal with banks as little as possible and the Patriot Act has no influence on that whatsoever. Also, I try to become friends at some level with the manager or officer. That was quite useful living in a larger city.
I just think banks do some really obnoxious stuff all on their own with the complete approval of the government and they always have.
The reality is that terrorists do have networks and deal in large sums of money. Times have changed. I grew up in a time when we had never been attacked on our own soil.
