I could drop him off in the Loop and pick him up at Wrigley field. The only harm that he might suffer is having too many beers or spending too much money.

Now, Houston or Dallas? He'd be pretty much dead.

Chicago is pretty huge, land-wise, and Gary is certainly big enough to be considered its own deal, I would think.

(My estimation of time was based on going from the Loop to central Gary - it's a drive I make pretty regularly. I don't think of the 100+ south block as being "Chicago", per se, though it is in Chicago proper)

Yeah, maybe I'm counting too much of East Chicago that isn't really Chicago as Chicago.

Surprisingly, when I walk through "bad" neighborhoods, nobody says a word to me. They must think the tall white guy is an undercover cop.

Very probable, happens to me all the time.

I think your figure is reasonable from border to border (Chicago to Gary). Chicago is a very sprawling city. It's just my own personal familiarity. There are areas that are in Chicago (south and west sides) that I just don't really think of as 'Chicago' anymore as I'm driving through.

Yeah, especially if I'm the one dropping you off and picking you up. We'd wind up logging long hours at some Wrigleyville bar...

I get the same treatment. Nobody wants to mess with the tall, skinny, white guy that doesn't look intimidated in the bad neighborhood.

Back on topic, would you prefer to show your company the outhouse or the living room?

+1

A couple of years ago I had to go to jury duty for a week or so in a bad area of Chicago (California in the 2600 south block, surrounding the jail). When I'd go away from the courthouse for lunch or stop for gas on my way back to the highway, I'd definitely see some shady characters (hustlers/dealers out on the street doing their thing), but nobody ever bothered me or really even gave me a second look.

That's soooo weird. I get that same treatment, like, every time I go to work.

Well, remember the scene in Vacation when Chevy Chase gets lost in a bad neighborhood, rolls down the window and asks for directions?.........and the response from a passer by is "Fuck your Mama!"

I had one of those experiences in St. Louis back when I was in college. We were all in suits because we were dressed for a job fair at a university we weren't familiar with in a city we weren't familiar with....we were not driving a fancy car, but four white kids in suits were out of place where we ended up.

It turns out that after asking for directions and putting up with a bit of "What the hell you doin' here?" we discovered that The University of Saint Louis is not the same as Saint Louis University.

Your premise for the thread is that Chicago is a crime-ridden shithole and therefore, it shouldn't have the Olympics. You've been shown, repeatedly that your premise is something you made up without bothering to do even a slight bit of research. That's all well and good for your daydreaming, but it's hardly fair to demand that the rest of us ignore reality with you and get "back to topic".

If I start a thread about how the sky is pink and green and Obama is an idiot for saying it's blue, and then someone posts a picture of the sky, it's hardly fair for me to accuse them of drifting off the topic of pink and green skies.

I'm just tired of Chicago getting every big event in the Midwest (obviously it's not every event, but way too much focus on Chicago). We need to promote more cities from the Midwest and this would have been a great way to do so.
