I really cannot understand the need to favor homosexuals in the law when they are assaulted. Is this the case? Is there more to it?

Does this legislation basically say that you get in more trouble if you attack a gay person instead of a straight person? What's the point?

A. It's not only about homosexuals.
B. It's basically legally codifying thought crimes.
C. The point is to make simple people, prone to emotion-based decision making, feel better about fooling themselves into thinking they are pursuing justice. Lefties cling to it like Righties cling to the death penalty.

It's easy to understand...

If a white guy commits a crime againts anyone its a hate crime...

If person that is not white commits a crime its not.

Yes- there is more to it . Repubs do hate to be denied their Godgiven right to commit hate-crimes ( especially against gays who they are so afraid they really are). It is almost as wonderful as not having to pay taxes.

Hate crimes do not make it illegal to commit violent crimes which are already illegal. They just add extra punishment for the thought component (thoughtcrime).

A "hate crime" is a crime motivated by the victims perceived membership in a group not simply profit or batshit-craziness on the part of the criminal.
