Re: Barack Obama will skip the 20 Year celebration of fall of the Berlin Wall
In my opinion, this is a bad move on Obama's part. The reason for his not going is because he's going on a 10 day tour of Asia two days after this event. Not sure why he couldn't fly to Germany and then just carry on to his first destination in Asia 2 days later.

Re: Barack Obama will skip the 20 Year celebration of fall of the Berlin Wall
In american idealism land, that means Reagan single-handedly tore down the wall.
Most rational people put Gorbachev as the key player who actually brought down the wall. Without Gorbachev, its completely unclear that the USSR would have disolved as peacefully and rapidly as it did. 99% of the credit should go to him. |

Re: Barack Obama will skip the 20 Year celebration of fall of the Berlin Wall
The Golden Boy wouldn’t be the center of attention. People will be there whether he’s there or not. Ergo, it holds little interest for him.
The Golden Boy would have to listen to the rightfully laudatory comments made about Reagan. Ergo, it holds little interest in him. The whole affair is not the Golden Boy's idea. Ergo, it holds little interest for him. This dumbshit is such a political child…

maybe he could have gone, imp, but it's hardly anything to get your panties twisted about. i guess if what speak said is true and that he's flying to asia 2 days later, maybe there's some stuff he had to take care of here first and would not have had time to do if he had gone to Germany. i really have no way of knowing one way or the other or what obama's reasons for not going were. i just don't really care.

I don't get the idea he's purposely avoiding it as he's a rockstar in Berlin. It would have been another no-win situation with political pundits. If he doesn't go, the story is that he is missing an opportunity to tout America's historical triumphs.......If he does go, then he's feeding his ego with a favorable crowd because his favor is waning at home. All in all, it's a 20th anniversary....there will be a 21st, a 25th, a 30th....There doesn't seem to be anything exceptionally special about the 20th.

Actually, no.
His ego will be bruised, because he won't be the reason that people show up...

Re: Barack Obama will skip the 20 Year celebration of fall of the Berlin Wall
Although it IS a bit perplexing, given that, based on his speech there last year, this "O worship" that so many kooky kons bray about reaches it's highest point in Germany. They freaking LOVE him there.

Hes will be going for the global warming thing and for the peace prize, think of how this plays now from a political perspective, which is not my motivation, but I am sure it was discussed or they should have. I cannot imagne them having thought this through.

Re: Barack Obama will skip the 20 Year celebration of fall of the Berlin Wall
Excerpt; German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaking before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday Nov. 3rd:
[F]or me America seemed completely out of reach . . . then on the 9th of November 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. And this border which had divided a nation, for decades, keeping people in two different worlds, was now open. And this is why for me, today is first and foremost a time to say thank you. I thank all those American and Allied pilots who heard and heeded the desperate appeal of then-Mayor of Berlin Ernst Reuter, in 1948, who said, you, the nations of this world, cast your eyes towards the city. For months, these pilots flew food to Berlin for the airlift, saving the citizens from starvation. Many of these soldiers risked their lives. Dozens lost their lives. We shall remember and honor them forever . . . I think of John F. Kennedy, who won the hearts of the Berliners, when, during his visit in 1961, after the wall had been built, he reached out to the desperate citizens of Berlin by saying, "Ich bin ein Berliner." I think of Ronald Reagan, who, far earlier than most, clearly saw the sign of the times and, standing in front of the Brandenburg Gate, already in 1987, called out, "Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." This appeal shall remain forever in my heart.
