Possible sexual molestation/assualt is not the only reason I think it's a good idea to have more than one adult chaperoning. There's less chance the kids will get into trouble the more adults you've got (theoretically anyway), if there's some kind of accident, there will be a much better chance of figuring out what happened with more than one mature point of view, and if something were to happen to the one adult there, you just better hope the group of kids you have paid attention in the classes.

And I don't think there's anything wrong with one adult for short periods of time, I'm talking weekend overnight trips.

    Fair enough.

The only thing I can say is that it's difficult sometimes to get enough people. My mom was a den mother for my den when I was in cub scouts. Plenty of times it was her as the only adult.

S'pose these same folks are terrified that a straight woman was going to molest boys?

    Oh I know.

I think I'm paranoid about it because when I was studying to be a teacher, making sure you never put yourself into a position that could be called into question was a big deal. It's not so much that it's necessary, it's just our culture seems to be becoming more and more litigious. A smart org (whether public school or BSA) should take whatever steps are reasonable to mitigate that. Making sure you've got 2 adults is reasonable, IMO. Maybe cancelling trips due to a lack of chaperones would get more parents involved.

These are probably the same folks that would give the boy a pat on the back.

True enough. We got the same thing (especially as male HS teachers). Never be alone in a classroom with a female student. Never close your door.

Basically the message was is that all it takes is a single accusation and your career as a teacher is done.

For me, though, giving my students privacy when they needed it was more important. I figure that by demonstrating trust in my students (which I did often) I'd elicit trustworthy behavior from them. And, while I taught, it worked.

I trusted my students. It was their parents I worried about.

    True.

Unfortunately, parent involvment wasn't an issue my students faced.

    A) Christ compels us to be accepting of EVERYONE. Turn the other cheek, minister to thine enemy. Etc. Not to exclude, but to include. To mend wounds and bridges. Any group that claims to be "christian" should take about ten minutes and read the red lettered parts of the bible. Then go act on those Commandments From Their God. Just sayin. Otherwise drop the holy roller act and admit "we just don't want to hang out with gays or people that don't believe like we do".

    B) There were always plenty of gays in the scouts man. Plenty of the kids I went camping with ended up gay. (course i was in a larger troop so there was a statistically higher chance. i also live in a day and age where people for the most part aren't ashamed of that sort of thing). And if you think that every kid whose throat you cram your interp of Christs teachings down is a christian you are sadly mistaken. You can't force someone to come to God. You can't coerce them. You can't bribe them. They have to do it on their own. Excluding them from a club where they SHOULD be able to be exposed to Christians working in brotherhood with non-christians and LEADING BY EXAMPLE, etc is a poor move if you want them to convert.
Im not your bro, pal. And dont even come here with that

    a) dont tell me how the scouts should excercise their religious freedom. They can interpret christianity however they want

    b)thats irrelavent

The Scouts were not impressed by obama's taped message.

I think the bigger problem is that only 43000 scouts showed up. I guess the others just aren't good scouts, or don't really care.
Why did so many chose to not attend such a monumental event?

    Isn't the First Amendment great?
There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary: Those that do, and those that do not.

I find scouts to be excellent judges of human character.

I find them to be too young for that. It's why they get suckered so often into caring about such transparent bullshit.

They'll hopefully grow out of it.

Ahhhh... the good old days... when 'speaking truth to power' was a good thing.

Oh... yeah will that was 2008.

Fear not... it will be back again come 2013.
