....that we no longer have today?
That was a questioned posed to me by a moderate Republican man in his mid 40's the other day.
He hasn't been following the race very closely yet, and asked me to offer up the essentials, for and against, of each campaign.
Speaking of the President's opponents, I said, "They hold him responsible for the economic crisis of 2008. They believe his health care reforms are socialist. That he's an appeaser and an apologist for America. That his plan is to make every American dependent on the federal government. That he has raised taxes to crushing economic effect. And finally, he's all about taking away their guns and their freedoms".
Which led the guy to ask the question.
He also asked if there was any further information about Obama taking people's guns away.
I kinda got stumped.
What freedoms did we have before Obama that we no longer have today?

Where did you get that? Not buying insurance as ordered is not the same thing as being a free rider. That's the conceit at the heart of ACA. It's a lie.

If ACA is not repealed, people will, eventually, be locked up over the mandate. It's the same road we went down with mandatory auto insurance, and despite promises to the contrary, people are locked up for not giving their pound of flesh to the insurance companies.

In NYS there are thousands of people who drive without insurance and even after getting caught don't get locked up.
Heck, if every DWI that killed at least one person was locked up the only housing the US would have would be prisons.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. I don't know how many people, in which states, manage to flout the law and get away with it. But plenty of them go to jail. Are you disputing that?

Clearly you've been fortunate enough to never have lived on the lower end of the economic scale, or with those who have. I can assure you, it happens all the time. People who drive without insurance go to jail. You're hedging your bets with "significant", so I assume you'll just move that goal post somewhere convenient to your argument, but you can't deny reality.

I grew up one of the poorest neighborhoods in Brooklyn for 18 years.
I currently drive to work through two of the poorest neighborhoods in Nassau County.
I work with a guy who lives in Roosevelt, NY and occasionally drive him home.
The police look for erratic driving, they don't stop anyone to check their insurance cards.

If you're in an accident without insurance you get a court date where the judge tells you, "Don't do that again!".
And then you go out and do it again.

Are the answers constrained to freedoms lost under Obama. Or does it also include freedoms lost under Bush that Obama promised to reverse - and didn't?
